MAGApocalypse2025 – Introduction

Welcome to MAGApocalypse2025

During the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama asked us all to do what we can to wrest our nation from the clutches of a self-confessed sexual predator and the cult he leads, which masquerades as the Republican party. I am a writer. I can write. So here I am.

With this blog, I’m out to help send Donald Trump out of public life permanently.

Along the way, I hope to help turn the Republican party back to its Lincoln roots. The GOP is a rusty oversized oil tanker, so the ship will be hard to turn. But if enough of us push, over time, we might succeed. Me—I can’t stand by anymore; I have to join the push. Thanks for your impassioned nudge, Ms. Obama.

The changes that Trump and the MAGA movement have already brought to our society scare me. The changes they plan to bring scare me even more—attacks on schools, knowledge, science, black and brown people, anybody, really, who they think doesn’t think like them.

And many of the changes that post-industrial globalized capitalism have brought to our society scare me—the decimation of our homeland manufacturing, of our rural communities and farming families; the marginalization of folks who aren’t equipped for or interested in the information economy; the ever-widening gap between the billionaires and the rest of us, not just in terms of wealth, but also of power.

I am afraid. Are you afraid? I understand the fear we all have, which is a common emotion to us all, even if we have different reasons.

And that fear makes me mad. In fact, it puts me into a rage. And it tries to make me hate.

I hate feeling hateful. I’m a Quaker and so I am committed to nonviolence in method and I believe in the spiritual power of love. If I were to meet Donald Trump in person, or Mike Johnson or Mitch McConnell, or any of the other people who have sold their souls to Powers and Principalities and to the Father of Lies and his orange prince, I would do my best to be loving. Not with much hope of changing their characters, I guess, but with a faith that love expressed person to person does have some power for good.

But I can’t test that power with them in person. And anyway, I would rather speak to those of us in the middle of all this chaos and rancor who are trying to balance our fear, our anger, and our temptation to hate against the commandment to love one another, even to love our enemies.

But back to the election. I believe that the MAGA movement threatens love at almost every level, so that’s my focus with MAGApocalypse2025. As I address the ways the MAGA movement threatens us, I will be pushing right up against the limits of love with both my manner and my matter, with my tone and my message. I will try to stay faithful to both love and truth, but we all know that this truth is ugly.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to the Holy Spirit, which I pray will guide my efforts. And, in the words of the prophet Amos: Let justice roll down like a mighty flood.
